Healing Haiti Day 1!
Getting up at 2:30 am and heading to the Birmingham airport was exhausting. Most of our team members were on 2-5 hours of sleep and somehow we had no arguments and no major difficulties. Our two hour flight to Miami was a breeze and we had another two hour flight from Miami to Port au Prince. The Port au Prince airport was small but the culture and the music as we arrived abundant. It was a hassle getting 64 bags through the chaos of the streets and the traffic of the streets made me appreciate our road conditions in America. Man, do I take for granted stop signs and speed limits!
The first thing we wanted to do was go swimming. Rule #1 of missions is learning to be flexible. When we arrived at the hotel to swim, we were turned down. This was the first time we had to change plans and go with the flow. We were served spaghetti, avocados, Mexican spaghetti, bread, and Coca Cola and 7 Up from glass liter bottles. (YUM!)
After our amazing dinner, several of us decided to hang out with the local boys and play futbol. It was amazing to see the kindness of these kids to include us in their games and take advantage of the beautiful day that God has created.
After some chill time, we had our first team devotion. We had some ice breakers and learned that Steve got hit by a bus as a child, and Dana can turn her feet backwards!! Deep in the discussions, we shared our first day experiences and played with Play-Doh. How does Play-Doh relate to Haiti mission work? Play-Doh represents the flexibility needed to mold us to what God is creating us to be. That is what our first day has taught us!
